Mary Shanley
Mary and I met when I approached two girls who were kissing and cuddling in the park and asked if I could take their picture. It was the late 90’s and I was in a photography class. Mary’s girlfriend at that time was going to the same school. I didn’t know them and they didn’t know me so after I snapped a couple shots, I thought I’d never see the cute lesbian couple again. A couple years later I was working with Mary at ShopNBC and out of the blue I told her, “I have pictures of you.” She spent a few days creeped out until I showed up with the pictures and she remembered the whole thing. We’ve been good friends ever since. Oh, and as it turns out, she’s not always a lesbian.
Mary is one of those people you meet once in a lifetime. She is her own person without compromise. A rebel genius with a brain, a creative soul, cutting insight, and a free spirit. She’s also the wildest person I know.
Though we’ve known each other for nearly a decade, we hadn’t worked on much together until she agreed to co-produce Microscopic Life. She is, as it happens, the source of some of our best story leads.
